Today, I was chatting with a customer who comes regularly to my job. He sticks his hand out and I put my hand on his, thinking he's giving me a high five. He was just waiting for his receipt. FML

Today, I was checking out a customer who seemed quite friendly. As I finished, he reached slightly over the counter and I impulsively reached out and shook his hand. He gave me a dumbfounded look and said, "Can I have my change please?" FML

Who the hell "puts" their hand on a high five? You gotta slap that. The way you described it made it sound like a conjugal visit at a state penitentiary. No wonder it would have been awkward.

I can relate ; once when I was over a friend's house, we were eating dinner and we were going to pray. his grandma stuck his hand out and I have her a high five. -___- so awkward.

Take it as going over and beyond in customer service! going that extra effort (even if was by mistake) can make a difference in someone's day

You should have tried to play it off as a joke. And if you thought he wanted a high five in the first place, then I doubt he's the kind of person who'd be annoyed about it...amused by it maybe.
