Today, my boyfriend of almost a year and a half broke up with me when he decided he wasn't in love with me anymore. We gave our stuff back, he was joking and happy the whole time until I told him I was taking back my cat. At that point he burst into tears. FML

Today, I was crying at my desk at work. My colleague tried to cheer me up by saying: "Don't worry, I'm sure you will find a new job soon". I didn't even know I was fired. I was crying because my cat died this morning. FML

On one hand, I understand where your boyfriend is coming from. My boyfriend finds crying attractive too, especially when coupled with running mascara. Something about it just appeals to him. But he hates seeing me hurting. Your boyfriend seems to be of similar mind. He loves you and of course doesn't love seeing you hurting, but he thinks you're beautiful when your eyes are filled with sparkling tears. He chose a bad time to point it out, obviously, but I believe he was just trying to comfort you in a way he thought was appropriate.
