Today, I was dying my hair a subtly different color. It was only supposed to turn my hair a shade or two lighter, but it seems someone at the store thought it would be funny to switch the dye in the boxes around. My hair is purple. FML

It was my first time getting my hair dyed, and I only wanted it a little lighter and not pay 100 dollars compared to 10 dollars haha. And it sucked because I had to go to my waitressing job at a fancy restaurant right afterwords.

The person that did that to you needs to eat shit and dye!

Wauw thats really unlucky! But on the bright side, purple hair is awesome!

The FML isn't that her hair is purple, it's that it turned completely different to what she wanted. She never said she didn't like it. It'd be like ordering steak and getting chicken; still good but not what you wanted. .

There was another FML like this. Ever since then I've been paranoid about buying my hair dyes and always check the bottle before I mix.

I understand that not everyone can go to the salon but as I stylist I'm supposed to say at the very least get professional color. Box dyes have metallic salts and oxidize so you never know what the outcome may be.

Don't agree much. I have never experienced a colour I didn't expect, but again: I have realistic expectations. I've known plenty of people that went to dye their hair in a salon and it came out totally different from what it should be or the colour ruined their hair in other ways. I have, however never had any problems when dyeing my hair myself from regular box dyes. Why should one Go to the salon if one could just learn to colour your hair yourself and not spend 6x more money? There are so many better things to spend money on. I also hate how a lot of hair dressers pull at the hair while working.

I haven't had any problems either. Just don't expect to go from dark, dark brown to platinum blonde, and don't expect a dark brown dye to completely cover a platinum blonde.

If you really were a true hair stylist, you'd know metallic salts are specifically in gray coverage colors and that her hair turning purple had nothing to do with people swapping the bottles. She either has a red pigment to her hair and she chose an "ash" color (ash means blue); or vice versa.

I do both, dye at home and go to the salon. The only issue I have ever had with either is sometimes the blue or purple highlights not showing. I have used professional and pharmacy brands. I know people have horror stories from both experiences, but I think both have their upsides. DIY jobs are great for experimenting or touching up in between trips. Salon jobs are great for getting stuff I don't want to try at home or just pampering myself. My mom use to be a cosmetologist, so my DIY jobs do have come with decent advice if I'm trying something new.

Being purple's not that bad, OP. Just kidding. I would feel the same way if I went to re-dye my hair and it turned out blue or something. Hopefully you can learn to rock it until you get a chance to lighten, tone and dye it back to a more desired shade.

Hey I have purple hair! But I meant to do it.. Also YkindaDI cause the boxes are sealed shut, so if that shit seems tampered with, don't buy it yo!

Pranks like that I don't understand, you'll never know if it worked, the joy of a prank is laughing at the "prankee" imo. But don't worry, just say you're a big fan of hit girl,

Well.. If the person who pulled the prank read FML, they would know it work :) But I do agree.

So you didn't notice before you dyed it when the dye bottle had a suspiciously purple looking cream in it?

A lot of purple dyes that you have to develop yourself don't actually look purple until they've been on your hair for the required time. And I've had brown dyes that actually do look a bit purple before, same as blondes that have a blue tint because of the peroxide. The only dye I've found that looks the same as it's going to end up is the stuff you get in pots (e.g. Stargazer, Directions, Manic Panic, Crazy Colour etc etc).

No worries, it's an in color. But really there's color correction kits at the store.

That's why they always tell you to test it out on one section of hair first. To make sure you like the color.
