Breach of contract. Your landlord is required by law to pay for your move into your new apartment and possibly additional compensation for damages.
If it's a month to month tenancy as opposed to a fixed lease, there's always a right of non-renewal so no breach. Lesson here is, insist on signing a long-term lease.
I'm pretty sure a landlord is required by law to tell you if they are posting the property for sale. the fact that you have to move out so quickly suggests there is a current buyer, therefore the property has been posted for sale for sometime and he should have explained that you may need to move with only a 30day notice. sucks I'm sorry you have to deal with that, moving is a painful process
if you signed a lease he had to either pay it out or compensate you. And he had to give you time to find a new place. That's how it is in Canada at least. look into your renters rights
Here it depends on if the tenancy is a lease that establishes a fixed time for the lease. The notice requirements are more onerous then. Sounds like the OP was under a month to month rental agreement and not a formal time-bound lease.
I'm sorry OP, I've been through a similar situation and it's no fun. Best of luck in finding somewhere!
you might be able to sue him
Bad luck bite you twice...
I'm so sorry OP. Don't know if you have any legal rights in this case as I'm not a lawyer and every state has their own rules, but I would seriously consider contacting someone to see if you have a viable case against your landlord. And insist on getting your security deposit back. I also hope you can get your cat back. I had to leave my cat with my dad when I left for college and she passed away while I was gone. I had to leave her behind because she was too old for me to feel safe moving her across the country.
Awww poor kitty!
30 days is a long time
That really sucks. Especially the Cat! But try and look at the bright side... I guess you have less stuff to move now... Good luck in finding a new place though!

Whut! I'm no legal expert, but wouldn't that be breach of contract?
YDI, a cat is a fuzzy friend, a new place to live isn't worth giving that up.
