Today, I was lecturing my high school students on the importance of a good education. I pointed out the janitor in the hall and told them if they didn't stay in school, they'd end up like him. Then one of my students raised her hand and reminded me that the janitor I pointed to was her dad. FML

Ydi. A lot of people end up with jobs like that because they can't get anything better and at least they have a job.

Serves you right, OP. Why would you even say that? At least he ha s a job, you're not better than him or anyone else who does "dirty work".

So am I garbage because I drive truck? Wtf is your problem. Every job is important in some way. You are SUPPOSED to be teaching kids. I suppose you'd like a nasty classroom. That "janitor" cleans YOUR room. Apologize to that student and that MAN.

Screw you, OP. Your elitism disgusts me. I've got an undergraduate degree and I work in a pub, and I actually love my job. Did I need an education to get it? No, but that doesn't mean all jobs that don't require an education involve no skill or intelligence. You're an incredibly closed-minded person and I hope you enjoy reading all of the flames you've gotten on this post :)

that janitor probably makes more money than you. so you should STFU!

Actually, as a teacher that definitely is my inclination... But yes, you do have to be sensitive.

A lot of people's points are about the economy and that may be why he's doing this job and while that point is totally correct and valid, it slightly misses the main point because why should you as an educator of today's youth be demonstrating a condecending attitude twards people who work in a job that society has deemed a job below yours. What if because of your comment those kids left your classroom and went out and teased that janitor? What would you do? Would you reprimand them? Oh wait how could you because you have the same narrowminded childish view as them. I know a janitor who for the majority of his life served our country in the Army and now instead of sitting around the house during retirement he decided he wanted to do more and help kids, so he started being a janitor. If any child I know ended up like that janitor I'd rejoice in the fact that they didn't turn out to be a narrowminded prick but instead a humble hard working member of society.

wow. frankly in this world today, any job is a good job, im a licensed electrician, and if i had to, id work at a gas station, be a custodian, they actually make a good wage, whatever it took. you should have explained better. if you don't finish school you wont get a job AT ALL. you can't even get a job at a coffee shop anymore without a G.E.D. especially if your over 18, if your not responsible enough to finish high-school, how can you be responsible enough to pour this gentleman a cup of coffee?

where i'm from janitors make more then teachers

You should not be an educator. Are you also one of those @&$!er's in high school that told all of your students they needed to get into "good" colleges to succeed in life so they can get sold off to the education system and amass and colossal debt? 3 years later out of high school and I hate people like you that spew that bullshit.

Janitorial work is not the easiest work out there. Plus, instead of leaching from the government, he has a job, even if it may not be the one he wanted. I understand everyone makes mistakes and slip-up's woth their wording, but oh boy, do you deserve it for this one. I'm hoping the teacher learned from the mistake.

Like you did much better, you're a teacher?!
