Today, I was lecturing my high school students on the importance of a good education. I pointed out the janitor in the hall and told them if they didn't stay in school, they'd end up like him. Then one of my students raised her hand and reminded me that the janitor I pointed to was her dad. FML

Ydi. A lot of people end up with jobs like that because they can't get anything better and at least they have a job.

Serves you right, OP. Why would you even say that? At least he ha s a job, you're not better than him or anyone else who does "dirty work".

Mmm.. you're a teacher. You paid how much to go to school? He's a janitor. He didn't pay to go to school. Yet, the two of you, probably make roughly the same amount of money. Teachers don't make nearly as much as they should, ill give you that. However don't go judging someone based on their profession/job. At least he is working and not living off of the state/government. Cleaning classrooms or teaching in them, its a paycheck either way.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought this!

Another teacher pushing a view point. I have found the most important persons in a building to be the janitor. He will help and answer phones or do anything if someone else does not show. But ask them to help out and do his job... Like clean a toilet...

I feel SO bad for the student!!!!! She will remember this day forever , & might affect how she views her Dad from now on!!!!!

In my area, the janitorial staff must have a 2yr vocational certificate in custodial services/hospitality in order to be offered contractual employment. If they don't have the degree when they're hired, and haven't gotten it by the time their 3yr provisional contract is up, their employment ends.

Janitors can be smart. Didn't you ever see Good Will Hunting? Ok, that was a joke. But seriously, all your teaching them to do is to be a judgmental bitch with a holier than thou attitude. Seriously, I really hate when people don't even consider the situations others might be in, and instead accredit it to laziness or lack of ambition. Maybe he couldn't pay for college, or maybe he was laid off from another job. It seems you didn't even think of that. And you're a teacher?

Ydi. If you think your college degree qualifies you to judge anyone else's job, then you're an abominable twat.

Well aren't you just so ******* enlightened? Seriously though, I never judge people with jobs of that status, because you never know why that person is in that job. I also think formal education is really overrated these days. That's why there are so many people who go thousands of dollars into debt for a degree in something like Liberal Arts and either end up flipping burgers, mopping floors, or vandalizing government buildings because they can't get a job with a salary they feel is worthy of them. It's a shame how many high school graduates simply go to college with no plan. I have no degree. Instead I joined the Navy and am learning how to be an aviation electrician. If I do well and am honorably discharged, I'm likely to get a good job in the commercial airline industry or something similar, whether or not I get a degree. I do, however, plan on getting a degree in aviation maintenance, since it will actually be worth the effort I put into it because it will make me even more valuable as an employee.

YTDI, hate when people judge others by what they do. You never know what each person has gone through, everyone person that has got to where their at has a story to tell experience to share and wisdom to pass. Never judge a person by their job title as a lot of people at my previous place of employment have learned the hard way that the janitor makes twice as much as the director (144k/ yr) of the whole building. Yup he laughs all the way to the bank in his exotic car everyday while a lot of ignorant people in management positions think they are so important and have so much power think this guy is a failure that ended up scrubbing toilets .

As far as you know, he have a PhD, many people just can't get a job in their field so they have to settle for something else. And don't underestimate people who clean up your shit, imagine what will happen if they stop. People like you make the world a shittier place. In short: YDI.
