Today, I was quizzing a girl at my college, and I noticed that when she answered a question, her ears wiggled. It was cute, so I pointed it out. She burst into tears, and the guy next to me said, "Way to make her feel insecure, douchebag." FML

My exact words were "Hey, your ears wiggle when you answer questions, haha. That's cute." Not the smoothest thing to say obviously, but I guess I should have kept my comment to myself.

Tell her you thought it was cute and didn't mean to be a douchebag.

Even if she wasn't sensitive about her ears, did you think you were the first person to make that comment, so you'd impress her with your perceptiveness?

He was trying to talk to her. Don't be a dick

I can only assume that she's struggled with teasing or something like that. It's a shame, you seem sweet OP.

I'm sorry there was a miscommunication there. She may have just been having a bad day, and dealt with people teasing her about her ears before. You can have the loveliest habits in the world; if someone teases you for them for a long time, you start to hate them.

Well you at least know that you meant in no way to offend her. Give her time to calm down and tell her you genuinely thought it was adorable.

You said it was cute and she cried? Whenever someone tells me something quirky I do is cute, I just blush like crazy. Sorry, OP. You're still a good guy!

Did you ever get a chance to explain what you meant by it?

wait? you're 15 and in college?

It's also possible she burst into tears because it's the nicest thing someone had said up her in awhile. That sort of thing can happen especially if a girl is in a relationship with someone and being taken for granted. Besides that, she really could have burst into years for any number of reasons. Girls are strange creatures, not easily understood by anyone, even me and I'm one of them.

You told her she does something cute; you did nothing to make her cry. Congrats on being 15 and in college.

Some high schools let you dual enroll in both college and high school, I started college when I was 15.

Did you end up apologizing to her or asking her what's up?

I didn't say college, I put school and FML changed it to college.

damn if you told her it was cute and she still burst into tears she must just be REALLY sensitive.

First off: Being a teenage girl is hard, there is a stereotype ideal that a lot of us try for. We are incredibly self conscious because other girls can be vicious if we aren't just like them. Second off: Never assume a girl is on her period if she is upset number 42. Thirdly: It is possible that she was crying for another reason. Maybe she was having a rough day or her boyfriend cheated on her. If she was already upset, your comment might have just been the 'straw that broke the camels back'.

she wasnt a teenage girl. they are in college.

She's cute.... Ask her out for dinner, make a move on her. She'll forget about her freak show ears!

I think this is a good idea... I would want her to know I wasn't trying to be mean!!

You like her! Go for it. Go get her and tell her you love that about her and ask her out!

I think you need to apologise no matter what, and swing it around so she knows you think she's cute. Maybe she just needs to see what others see as flaws some people like.

I had an experience like this... I feel like it's one of those situations where it'd be better to be a boyfriend or at least a friend before commenting, even though it was a kind gesture. It's just hard to trust after you've been teased extensively in the past.
