Today, I was riding on the Moscow metro. My friend and I were joking around in English about taking a nap on the nerdy business man next to me. As we laughed and made comments about him, which we thought he couldn't understand, he asked, "First time in Moscow?" FML

Are you stupid? Most people all over the world understand English because its everywhere- schools, media, etc.

Some lessons are learned the hard way.

this reminds me of how kids cover their own eyes and say "you can't see me!!".. just cuz u can't speak any other language.. doesn't mean no one else can understand u

Yeah, I do that kind of shit sometimes, but in french.. english is way too common, duh. If the same thing happens to me though, I'll know I'll deserve it haha.

Wow you totally deserved what ever he said back to you.

I guess the Russians then started to joke about how stupid you are in Russian.

Lol classy comeback. Subtle yet stinging! X3 My favorite type of comebacks.

You totally deserved that, when traveling you should assume that everyone has at least a basic grasp of English... ESPECIALLY business people.

That's what you get for assuming someone doesn't speak English! Some countries actually teach both their native language and English to school children, unlike here in California.

So I grew up in California and so did my Husband and we were both pretty fluent in Spanish at some point. He still is, and we didn't learn that from our parents.

Man you should have counted on a nerd knowing different languages! Jeez!

I've been a lot, and you should have been schived. YDI for talking on any metro, especially the one in Moscow.

What? You mean other countries aren't like the US, in that we actively try to only know ONE language? YDI for making inappropriate comments about a stranger, in part because of his ethic background. I bet you wouldn't have done that if you had thought he spoke English!

The OP is American? Tell me how you know this?

...because she assumed that the moscowian wouldn't understand english?
