Today, I was riding on the Moscow metro. My friend and I were joking around in English about taking a nap on the nerdy business man next to me. As we laughed and made comments about him, which we thought he couldn't understand, he asked, "First time in Moscow?" FML

Are you stupid? Most people all over the world understand English because its everywhere- schools, media, etc.

Some lessons are learned the hard way.

The sad part is you are visiting Russia and spending your time on FML. Yes, FYL.

However wonderful, magical and mystical Russia might seem to you, it is, like the rest of the world, a place where people live day to day lives. You might as well mock yourself for being on FML, it's just as sad.

the weird part about this fml is your comments. wtf? u joke about napping on people? who does that? and if this guy was so nerdy, why were u making sexual comments about him?

Again like I said to my other comment: GET A ******* SENSE OF HUMOR. THIS IS NOT A DISCUSSION FORUM, THIS IS A WEBSITE FOR PEOPLE TO VOLUNTARILY HUMILIATE THEMSELVES.

It doesn't matter if he can understand you or not. What you did was rude and in extremely poor taste. Do you think that making fun of someone is okay if it is another language? Learn some respect and decency.

you made sexual joke about him and he understood it? You lucky you didn't get your ass beaten :S

I was an English teacher in Moscow and I completely understand - it's a pretty funny situation I could have been in any number of times. It's incredibly naive (not to mention arrogant) to assume that everybody in Moscow, let alone the world, speaks English. I would suggest to the people that assume this to think back - how much of your high school Spanish or French do you remember? Would you be able to understand a fast, colloquial conversation? If so, well done. Very few people in Moscow could. This does NOT, however, mean that the English speakers don't speak Russian. Imagine if you had a language you could use as code to talk about people on a boring metro journey. I bet you would. I certainly did, and it's hilarious.

I don't know about Russia, but here in France we start learning other languages way before high school ! I must add that (in my opinion), french and spanish are much more difficult to learn than english. Plus, even if you're not a fluent speaker, it's pretty easy to tell if someone is making fun of you =/

Okay, first of all, French and English both come from the same language group. Russian does not, making it much harder for Russians to learn English. Also, younger Russians are more likely to speak okay English, but the older ones, who learnt badly taught (and often incorrect) English in Soviet schools, if they learnt any, are unlikely to understand anything past 'how are you' and 'what's your name'. So, I'd be more hesitant to openly make fun of someone in France. In fact, I probably wouldn't. Russia though, is a whole 'nother story, I promise.

I live in Norway, and we start learning English when we are six. and it is nothing like you learning French in High School, because the English language is everywhere! television, movies, music, books, ALOT of it is in English! I don't know much about the language situation in Russia, but if he is a buisniss man, one should asume he speaks english! It is not arrogant to asume everybody speaks English, it is smart! Not only because it has become the world language, but because if one did, one would not get in OP's situation!
