Today, I was seated, once again, at the "too small" children's table. I'm twenty. FML

Same thing happened to me last year =[[ nice to know I'm loved, respected or seen as an adult. My relatives kept asking what year I was in high school then wouldn't believe me when I told them no I'm sophomore in college, then when I'd try to talk them they do that I'm talking to a child thing, act like they're being so patient letting me interrupt the adult conversation to say something. on a separate note/tangent I don't get why the **** anyone would try to exclude their kids even if they were young. If you'd say "so they are out of the way so the adults can have a good time" that is such narcissistic BS. Kids behave better when they are included anyways because they aren't attention starved, then they also learn how to behave by being around adults thru observation. include your kids in your "adult conversation" let them think and learn if it something they don't understand, teach them. don't withhold knowledge because you can't be bothered to talk to your kids, or think they wouldn't be able to learn. idk I think it shows great irresponsibility to separate yourself from your kids like that, especially on what is supposed to be a family holiday. I understand, and recommend, taking a night out every once in a while but thats a very different situation.

Ditto. My extended family stopped getting together years ago (thank God) and I was never at the adult table, although a much, much younger cousin was deemed "a woman" and given the honor. She was also allowed in the kitchen with the "women" to help cook while I was designated a "child" and kept out (she was still a teenager, I truly was a grown woman). Guess who was the one-person cleanup committee for a family of 25, though? Yep. Got stuck washing every dish (no automatic dishwasher) while everyone else sipped after dinner drinks in the living room and made fun of me for being a serious college student (apparently education is for 'fools'). I was the only person of my generation old enough to drink, but I was scrubbing away while the kids got toasted because I was in my 20s but "too young" to drink while the high school girl was deemed old enough. In a shocking development, I am the only person of my generation who did not 1. do drugs 2. become an alcoholic 3. serve jail time 4. get an abortion 5. get a divorce 6. go on welfare and most of them have done more than one of these things. I am seriously considered the family freak. Relatives have actually asked me "What's WRONG with you?" because I'm not a junkie, don't have a criminal record and have a good job. One cousin has actually done all of these things. She's the favorite.

Don't feel too bad, I'm eighteen and haven't seen my family in a year, and instead of sitting with the people my age and the grown ups they sat me with the kids to baby sit.

Dang how old do you have to be to sit at the grown up table??

So? Quit whining; unless there were empty seats at the "adult" table, they must have not had enough room for you. Unless there are a bunch of 16 year olds sitting at the table and you're not, you should just spend the time talking with your little cousins and have fun. I sat at the "kids" table last time I was at my grandparents' house, and I'm 24. Among the relations there were my 21 year old brother and 22 year old cousin. Everyone else was under 18, but some were pretty close -- my other brother was 17.
