By look how totally not racist I am! - 11/07/2014 03:32 - United States - Salida

Today, I was stuck on a campus tour with my subtly racist mother who, in an attempt to seem open-minded, deemed it appropriate to refer to our black tour guide as "Sistah". FML

Hopefully people won't assume you're a racist just because your mother is.

Lol the worst part is you look racist by proxy now. just say she's off her meds and hope for the best.

Thankfully her views haven't influenced your behavior. Still, it had to be pretty embarrassing to be around her during the tour. Hopefully the others in attendance didn't judge you based on her actions. Sorry OP!

They come from a different generation. Things like this were condoned and encouraged. They likely won't change, and if they do, old habits die hard and slow.

I hate when people do ignorant crap like that. The guide should have responded with a hillbilly accent in turn, but of course she would have probably lost her job for that. Instead people have to take that kind of ignorance just to keep their jobs. Disgusting.

I know she's your mother but didn't you at least take her to one side and tell her to stop?

I feel your pain OP my dad's like that except he doesn't try to seem open minded, he just tries his best to be an asshole.

Not sure where the "subtly" racist part was.

How sad is that, I wonder where your mother even got that from?

I hope you sat your mother down and explained to her that what she did was wrong. If that's subtly racist then what's openly racist?

At least she was doing it in an (awkwardly, misguidedly) friendly way. Still cringe-inducing, but sociable racism is better than outright hateful racism, even if they're both still bad!
