Restraining orders are so hard to get. My ex was stalking me and sending threatening texts, leaving voicemails saying he'd kill me if I ever got with someone else. The police told me it didn't "sound like he's serious" and that they couldn't do anything unless he actually made an attempt on my life.

That's unfortunately a very common response. It's disgusting that things only escalate from there. Really sorry you had to go through that.

And in my backwater hick of a hometown you had to make a report with the police first who then get you in to see someone at the courthouse. Kind of hard to do when they just keep blowing you off and no one at the courthouse will speak to you without you first talking to the police.
