Today, I was working as a lifeguard. A woman began to have a seizure. Nervous, I went into shock and walked into a tree, knocking myself out. Post seizure, the woman stood up and walked away. Later, I woke up in the hospital. The ambulance had arrived to take her, but ended up taking me instead. FML

Oh dear - I think you should get a new job. I don't want to find out what will happen if you see someone drown... If you get nervous then this is not the job for you. YDI =/

If you go into shock when someone ELSE is in trouble, why on Earth are you a lifeguard? Get a new job.

I understand not knowing what to do and freezing up, but common. Walking into a tree? You should probably look for another job, like working in an office shuffling paper.

I don't think you should be a lifeguard. I sure as hell wouldn't feel safe with you as my lifeguard.

I'm an epileptic. and #22 one in every people have epilepsy. it IS common and I think about 25% of the population has a seizure at one point in time. honestly, people like you are why the stigma is around and people don't know how to react. #17 i've been through the same. poster should know his job. he/she deserves to be fired IMO. oh and FYI when someones having a seizure you roll them to their side. loosen anything around their neck time it and call 911. maybe next time you won't walk into a mysterious tree poster.

being trained is nothing like the real thing, I Dont think they should be fired for having a fight or flight response like that but I do think that a different job may suit OP better.

It's not that difficult to know what to do when someone's seizuring...at least watch House or Grey's Anatomy or something, good God..lol. Roll them on their side, hold their head so they don't bite/swallow their tongue, loosen any jewellery, etc around their neck.. But I can understand panicking, especially since the OP probably doesn't have any medical training outside of what to do when someone's drowning. It's a scary situation to be forced into.

#22- Any lifeguarding training cover seizures both in and out of water. As a lifeguard, I think seizure is one of the least frigtening situations. Any kind of neck injury, or intense bleeding injury would be much more frightening then a seizure. I would personally consider a possible job change. Maybe a "pool attendent."

A neck injury is scary in any situation but unless someone severed an artery bleeding isn't going to be a big deal, if someone severs their artery they are ****** anyway.
