Nope. That's not a date.
It would have been nice of him to pay for you, but you learned a few important lessons here.
ALWAYS bring cash, just in case this happens. I do agree that since he asked you on the date, and because it was the FIRST date, he should have paid for both tickets, but sometimes you just got to suck it up, pay your way, and then decline a second date if he asks you out again :P

Contrary to popular belief it's ignorant to be so confident in this "rule" that you don't bring your own money, I believe it was totally deserved in this case. This doesn't mean I don't believe the guy should pay though so don't get confused.
