Today, I went to the police station to find out if the tint on my new car's windshield was too dark. The officer took one look, told me that windshield tints are illegal in California, and ticketed me. So much for being honest. FML

Sorry, YDI. Know the law. Cop wasn't being a dick, he was doing his job based on experience and you drove right into this ticket by not looking up the law when it wasn't clear to you. Problem here wasn't the cop, it's all the people with illegal tint(plus add in everyone with illegal vehicle mods), w/o a fix it ticket 99% of people would leave the encounter with police and never think twice about removing it. The fine now associated with a fix it ticket does suck though, I feel your pain on that one.

Windshields are never supposed to be tinted anywhere. All other windows are ok.

You were honest, but stupid. You may have heard the phrase "ignorance is no excuse" in the laws eyes. You should have called the police station anonymously and asked first.

I thought it was illegal to tint your windshield period.

It wasn't even a Fix-It ticket? Take care of the problem within ten days and the ticket will be null and void. If not, I'd fight it. Tell the traffic court judge and they'll probably side with you.

In this situation, I don't think he needs to ticket you. You were being honest.

The point is not whether the officer needed to ticket him . . . although the laws and penalties for breaking them are supposed to be applied uniformly, officers can rely on their discretion. When I could still drive I had some cops let me off with a warning and some ticketed me for the same offense. The reality is that many cities, states, towns etc. depend upon the revenue from tickets and fines to meet their operating budgets.

That was an uncool move by the cop however it is on you. You could have used common sense and just looked it up. Here is the section of the California veh code: V C Section 26708 Material Obstructing or Reducing Driver x2019 s View Fix it and explain to the judge the events, best of luck.

That what cops do, act like douche bags.

Why didn't you do a little research BEFORE getting it installed? Never heard of Google? I just did one quick search and there's a ton of information saying it's illegal in California to tint any window parallel to or in front of the driver.
