It is not just a fish anymore than a cat is just a cat, they recognise owners and hard as it is to believe, many of the larger species and quite a few of the agressive solitary smaller species, have bags of personality and can even be trained to do very simple tricks. My grandfather owned an Oscar ( a type of large cichlid ) that would quite willingly play around with a diver toy, carrying it around, dropping it and fetching it ect. it used to fascinate me as a child to drop in the diver guy and watch the fish actually interact with it. The memory of fish is vastly longer than 3 seconds and proven to be so. They are also proven to feel pain . They have a nervous system just like you or any cat, dog or mouse ect and frequently suffer greatly at the hands of people like you , who think a fish is just a fish because it's not something you can cuddle and dress in stupid little outfits.
