I think it's a bit mean to say she shouldn't have second guessed it... I work hard and always have and I still would've been shocked to win employee of the month - some people don't expect it to be noticed that they're a good worker or whatever. Maybe she's just modest anyway, that's sometimes better than being over confident I think. Maybe next time OP!

If you know your performance didn't warrant the award, you did the right thing by highlighting the issue so your boss could give it to a deserving employee.
