While I agree with others that have said you should be upfront and clear, I do understand the "mental connection" thing. I actually had an ex who actually accused me of cheating at Words With Friends by looking words up in the dictionary, just because he had never heard of the word before. I wasn't (who DOES that anyway?). I was just smarter than him. LOL OP, you shouldn't have to "try" to break up with someone. I know you are trying to soften the blow, but most people appreciate the direct approach.
