My boyfriend found himself in the same position when he was first hired, but he still works for that same company 6 years later. I wouldn't give up just yet.
I see no reason why someone would be unemployed for a year. Expand the distance you will move/travel to for work, enhance your education, or lower your pride a bit and take a lower paying job. Everyone starts out somewhere and has worked those crappy jobs.
Easy for you to say. I was willing to travel literally anywhere that would be still paying me enough that I would be making more than the gas money it cost getting there and back. I could not afford to enhance my education as I had NO JOB. I was already applying for minimum wage jobs in addition to better paying jobs that I was qualified for. Sometimes the problem isn't that you're starting out. I was told to my face in an interview that they would like to hire me, I was perfect for the job, but since I had so much other work experience they decided to hire someone else because they were afraid I would leave too soon, when I found a better job.
That's simply not true. I have several friends who've had to look for a really long time before finding a job. They wouldn't get the jobs they were actually qualified for because they had no experience yet, and they wouldn't get hired for "those crappy jobs" because they were considered to be overqualified. Travelling far for a low-paid job may end up costing you so much in gas or train money that it's not realistic, and getting further schooling is difficult if you have no money to pay for it. Although there's definitely some things you can do as an individual to increase your chances of getting a job, you cannot overlook the fact that currently, in many countries, there's just more jobless people than jobs. Failing to acknowledge that structural problem is not helping anyone.
you don't know yet if you're gonna get laid off, unless your employer said you are.
Try not to dwell on what will happen. Instead look at reviewing your options. 1. keep a positive attitude at work. 2. Keep sending out your CV. Nothing says you need to stop doing that. 3. Also look at the option of starting your own business.
Dude you need to do extra things then. And make it look good too. Buy donuts for the staff.
I know the feeling, just happened to me too. fyl
no you just are replacing someone else from the 'wave', otherwise nobody would have hired you
I'm in the same boat, worked at my place for a month now, got told I would get more hours at the end of July, but instead the company released a statement on Thursday last week confirming numerous plant shut downs and if anyone is going to be laid off, it will be agency workers first! So much for having a job for the summer!!! Hopefully you get to keep yours!!!
The saying goes, "Last hired, first fired."
Something similar happened to me recently. Except I was looking for a job over 3 years and got fired after 3 days of work. Apparently they like brigade-workers better. They can pay them less.

You don't know that yet OP!!! Don't lose hope, and outwork the other workers. If you give up just because you heard of this "wave" you are going to be demotivated, and coworkers and your bosses will easily detect that demotivation, and then you really are ******!
If he was hired recently enough that he hasn't even received a paycheck, the odds of him being laid off are slim. He was most likely hired with other new people to replace people that have been there the companies about to lay off / fire.
