Today, it's my 18th birthday. My parents got me a $5 gift certificate to iTunes. It came for free with the iPhone they just bought my sister for her middle school graduation. FML

Well if you're 18, you're graduating high school this year, right? Maybe you'll get something big for YOUR graduation. Or maybe they figured that since they're paying for a party or college or something, you could settle for an iTunes card? Or maybe the iPhone made them go broke =p

Wow, I think so many of you are missing the point. The OP isn't on here whining that he didn't get the new laptop he wanted or a brand new car, it's a basis of comparsion issue. I've been in this instance in my own family as well. It hurts to have such a blatant display of favoritism thrown into your face. If money was tight or the parents decided that eighteen was the cut off age for expensive gifts, they could have acknowledged the birthday in some other, more thoughtful way than just handing a random thing like that off to him/her. I feel for you, OP.

that's awful. i'd hate to think that my parents have favorites amongst me & my siblings. i really hope that that first commentor was NOT serious. that really does suck. BUT, you're 18. Soon you'll be out of their hair, on your own, not bothered by anything that they do.

#71: when you're saying that kids shouldn't get phones until late high school, you're ignoring that there are places where kids live where people don't drive everywhere. i grew up in new york city and most kids are pretty independent because it's easy to just walk around the whole city without your parents driving you or anything. despite this, i still think it's ridiculous when i see little kids with blackberries, iphones, or other smart phones. do you think they really need the extra features that a smart phone gives them over the average flip phone? no.

You know what i got for my 20th? A cone of ICE CREAM! Take it as it comes buddy. Mine wasn`t even worth 5 bucks.

Get some hardcore songs with that $5, blast them to your parents 'content' >=p

Gee, I guess that graduating from middle school is really such an impressive achievement that it really merits an overpriced phone that'll probably be obsolete in two years. Does she get a hundred-dollar bill every time she wipes her own ass?
