Well, they really DID surprise you, I guess. Hopefully there was just some kind of date/time mix-up. Happy birthday!
20 of your closest friends? - you do realize that psychologically, its impossible to have more than 10 close friendships. And if someone set up their own surprise birthday party I wouldn't show either. Why didn't you just have a real party instead of telling people to pretend like you didn't know about the party that you were planning. Its pretty lame to invite someone to a party and then say "oh and this is a surprise for me so act like I don't know about it" And hey they did exactly what you wanted - they surprised you for your birthday. That was your intention with setting up the surprise party, instead of just having a party in the first place, wasn't it?
Where is the proof that it is impossible to have more then 10 close friends? And where did Op mention it was supposed to be a surprise party? The Op said that he hoped his "friends" were just trying to surprise him. Learn how to properly read before you open your mouth.
But most of all I really want to know exactly where you heard it is impossible to have more then ten friendships. Shit in my teen years I had easily more then 20 good friends. Of course we all just kinda drifted eventually, but that doesn't mean they weren't really good friends. So what are you credentials, or where is the scientific proof, and who did this study?

I'm so sorry that happened! Happy Birthday!!!! and #54, I think the OP meant to say was that she was expecting maybe a surprise gift or something special ALONG with everyone showing up for the dinner party.
#54, I think what she meant was that when she got there nobody was there, so she assumed they had planned some sort of surprise. Not that she asked them to surprise her in some way, but rather that was her assumption when nobody showed up. Turns out they were just assholes. I'm sorry, OP =( Happy birthday.
this came straight from an episode of Sex and the City.
@Tehalon, I had to go to a 4 driving school class on my 21st... awesome.

maybe you mistakenly gave them the wrong date or place? because I can't imagine all 20 people not showing up!
oh man poor you! especially at a restaurant sitting alone at a table meant for 20, that just makes it worse! I once did a birthday supper a few years back for about 20 people too and every came about 15 - 20 minutes late so I sat alone for 15 minutes thinking no one was going to come! even since then, I always make sure I meet up with one friend before so we can go to the restaurant together lolll
