@115 - If your brother was keeping five goldfish of any variety in anything less than around 500 gallons ( you need 200-240 gallons per pair of goldfish ) , and had no filtration, then the reason they died is bcause no one did the slightest bit of research. Goldfish have an adult size of at the very least, 12 inches in length when kept correctly, very often reaching 14 inches. They need very large tanks and ponds from the very first day you get them. They are a species of carp, and they require a LOT of space. When kept correctly they have a lifespan of well over 20 years. 30-40 years is not unusual. If you don't provide that space from the very first day , you ( yes you or whoever owns them since you are the one who is supposed to provide for their care and health ) will basically force the fish to stunt the growth of it's own skeletal system. Stunting also leads to a poor immune system and weak digestive system. On top of that, if you do not provide filtration, and some serious external filtration at that, you are basically making the fish live in their own waste. The human equivalent to this situation, would be you living trapped in a small room with very limited air supply, and having to do your business on the floor and live permanently in that room . Until you died from all the various health problems caused by living and moving through your own bodily waste. The water you keep them in has to be kept at a certain chemistry to keep them healthy. There is a biological cycle contained within a tank, and this must be monitored for all species of pet fish. Remember that unlike rivers and lakes, the water has no inflow or outflow or rain to refresh the water, other than that which you put in and take out as part of maintenence. Keeeping goldfish in tanks which are too small, with no filtration and irregular water mainenence, is the reason why they die so easily and quickly. Basically people are too lazy to look up correct research, and rarely if ever bother to ask experienced golfish owners about th extensive care they require. They are *not* a childrens toy or pet. They are not a disposable frippery . They have specified needs and space requirements. As much as if not more than any dog, cat or other popular pet. They are scientifically proven to feel pain and to suffer. If you cannot provide the space and care for them, please do not buy them.

Ive been keeping goldfish for a very long time, and most of that is completely unnecessary. Not to mention the writer didn't mention what type of goldfish, fancy or common.

pretty sure you can't tell if a fish is swimming when it's being spun in circles cause it was being flushed...

Awwww, sorry. He can survive in the sewer though. :) :)

What? You didn't check for a pulse??!! Don't you know that they mutate in the sewers and will come back and kick your ass??!!

Maybe the flowing spinning water just made it look like the fish was swimming, but in fact it wasn't.
