Today, my best friend went in for her scheduled mammogram, and I sent her a text saying, "How're your boobies?" It was only after I sent it that I realized I'd sent it to my history professor. FML

It's actually pretty common for professors to get their students numbers and give out theirs so they can send reminders or class cancellations to the whole class.

if that was "common," then it would have happened to me at least once in the 5 years i've been in college. but maybe it is a common thing for THAT professor in particular?

#47, "common" doesn't mean "always". There's a chance your professors just didn't want to do that.

It was a professor. Not a teacher. So that means OP is in college. It's not uncommon for a professor to give out their email or phone number.
