The amount of misinformation and ignorance on this thread is ridiculous. In no way is using the word "retarded" ok. Not even speaking about those with developmental disabilities. I work in the field. While someone may have MR secondary to another condition, they themselves are not mentally retarded. They are human beings. They have wants and needs and choices. If it was your family member who had downs, or cerebral palsy or whatever, I doubt very much that you would be ok with someone calling them a retard. You can throw around IQ numbers like you know something but unless you actually work in the field, and spend time with them, you should prolly just shut your mouth.

Calling someone the R word isn't ok. Do you walk around calling people the N word? It's a medical term, but generally we don't walk around calling people depression, or cancer, or whatever... Maybe you should meet some people with DD and then you would understand that it's really not ok.
