Today, my boss called me into his office and bitched me out for a good half hour for my attitude to our customers. Apparently I always look pissed off and sound sarcastic. That's just my face at rest. FML

yes, OP, that happens...unfortunately, we tend to be unaware about how our face looks atm, and ppl just ask if you're pissed or if something is wrong when you are feeling OK...it is pretty annoying.

Yes you can. When you work with customers your job is to smile. You get paid to do your job.

Yeah but you cannot help it if you naturally look angry all the time. You can smile and stuff but you can't smile for like six hours straight

Well you can't change how your face naturally looks, but you can make an effort to sound more pleasant.

That used to be my problem too, but then I became the boss. Now I have the excuse to look hateful and sarcastic.

**** the bosses of the world! I shall become the boss of them!

You're not the boss of me. Only my cats are the bosses of me.

And I'm the boss of your cats so your not even associated with me your like 2 levels below me. I don't even think your allowed to talk to me ;)

There's so many things you could have said to that but you chose to go with your cats.....

Congratulations! you learned how to thumb up your own comment!!! And the second one was from when you logged onto tour other account and thumbs upped it again

You could try smiling more. I work as a cashier and I just pretend I'm acting, like for TV or a play. I act all perky and happy and it gets me good reviews from customers, and my bosses, and if I mess up they just assume I'm a ditsy airhead and ignore it. Inside, I'm cussing most of them out 90% of the time.

My face is naturally in a frown. I spent my whole childhood with adults asking me "what's wrong?" and when I looked surprised and said "nothing" got told "well stop frowning." Eventually even my mother, who would not have noticed if my hair was on fire, noticed that my mouth just naturally turned downward and let go of it. It takes WAY too much effort to do the fake smile thing to humor others so **** it, this is what I look like and everyone can just deal.

People tell me that all the time aha it sucks !

Ha that happened to me too. Apparently when I act friendly to strangers I sound and look like the dude who walks up to you and asks you a random question before mugging you, as I have a slightly frowning expression by default and a deep voice. The way I solved it is to stop trying to act friendly and just act aloof and distant when you need something from a stranger. Instead of thinking I'm a criminal, they now think that I'm a guy who wants some info NOW and seems a bit bothered having to wait around for someone to give it to you. Better to be thought of as an inpatient guy than as a criminal. And for the moments when you need to be honest and heartfelt, just look someone in the eyes (very important, DON't turn away a lot), lower your voice, give an expression of concern (mine are sincere but you can fake yours if you're an asshole) and show you're listening by occasionally repeating what they say. It works wonderfully. There's my two cents and some tips for the OP.
