FMLs like this always make me wonder, are there like zero laws in the US about what are valid reasons to just fire someone? Here in Brazil, if someone fires you over random shit like that, they'd have to pay a lot for it, both to you and in taxes. You only get to fire people over a valid, work related reason.

It depends on the state. Some have strict laws about that where others are way more lax on the issue. The states that are lax about reasons for firing are usually known as "at will" states meaning they can fire you at will for ANY reason. However if prejudice is involved or some form of intimidation was utilized meaning it was a "hostile work environment" they can be sued but good luck proving that. They usually settle out of court with anyone who might have a legitimate claim because they don't want to be known as the "racist, homophobic, sexually harassing, etc." company. Claims like that make the shareholders nervous.
