There are a lot of comments saying to "report his ass!" I'd recommend reporting the theft, not your boyfriend's rear end.

Thats called theft, have him arrested. then you wont get kicked out at least.
It all depends on how he got ahold of your rent. If you use a joint account then it may not be theft per say. If it was physical cash then he's looking at possible petit theft or grand theft charges if you decide to press the issue, if nothing else, a judgement against him for the rent owed.
Apparently he thought it was severance pay. Have the police give him a vacation too.
