the smell is usually from a fatty protein buildup, it's called smegma... it is common in uncircumcised males due to lack of hygiene, it may give females yeast infections etc. the reason circumcision is more common in a modern society is because of the health benefits, honestly not circumcising a child is just foolish now days.
