Today, my boyfriend told me that he'd feel like a failure if he went to community college. I'm planning to go to community college next year. FML

At least you're moving ahead. Don't worry, you'll be fine. :)

College is expensive as hell. You'll save a ton of money by going to a community college and as long as you still get a degree from a good school you'll be fine.

Nothing wrong with going to a community college. We can't all afford to attend a university, and with good grades from a community college, you can transfer to any school that will take you and perhaps qualify for a grant or scholarship.

I'm not American, can someone explain me why community college is looked down upon?

Community colleges are cost effective and have an open admissions policy, meaning anyone who applies can get in. Personally, I think they're great, but I might be biased because I work for one!

Thanks #33. Yeah you gotta be really snobbish to look down at a place that gives an opportunity at education to anyone, regardless of their income or background.

Like I said in response to the previous comment...absolutely nothing!

Then you're definitely a failure in his eyes.

That's because you are stupid and will get nowhere in life with your poor education ;)

take a sharp metal object and firmly place it standing up and ram your neck into it. No one wants to hear your opinion.

Errrrmmm....as a teacher, I recommend community college to all students that don't have big scholarships to a four-year college and don't want to go to a trade school. In this day and age, you have to be pretty dumb to willingly spend several thousand dollars extra on standard math, science, economics, writing, etc. courses. Due to smaller classes and teachers that ONLY teach instead of doing research and writing with teaching as a necessary chore, the education is often BETTER than at a four-year college. If you have a scholarship and know what field you're interested in, sure, go to a 4 year. Otherwise? Don't waste your cash! Your boyfriend sounds either really smart with big scholarships and no common sense and poor social skills, or he's a moron!

I completely agree. So many people overlook all the benefits a community college can provide.

I agree with you. When I told my teachers that my plan was to go to a community college for my prerequisites and then transfer to a university they were all supportive. Most even said that if they could go back, they would do the same and save some money.

your boyfriend is going to burger college

nothing wrong with community college. You go, OP.

Community-college sometimes is just as good as any regular university. It sometimes is rumoured to be even better, due to the smaller class sizes comparatively. A professor could help a student more that way and more one-on-one time. Honestly, community college is a nice cheap way to get a decent education. I'm sure your boyfriend would understand, if you explained how it's not a failure, but actually an economic decision!
