Today, my car broke down on my way home from university. I tried calling for help, only to realise my phone had completely run out of charge. Luckily, I had passed a police station so I decided to walk the 10 minutes down the road to ask for a phone. When I got there, the station was closed. FML

Fact: a "closed" sign on an Australian police station is shorthand for "off fighting giant mutant spiders and steroidal kangaroos".

I didn't even know police stations closed o___O

...a closed Police Station? How is that possible?

Small town police stations close, usually you can find the officers home by spotting the car in the driveway. Most rural towns only have one or two officers and they can't man in 24/7.

Not everyone has the money for portable chargers or car chargers, people. As for the FML itself- that's a bit odd that the station was closed, unless OP means the station itself had been shut down and resources relocated elsewhere. Otherwise, they should have had at least two people on duty, I would think.

Small town police stations in Australia close at night all the time. There's not enough reason or resources or officers to keep it open. If you need emergency help, you ring 000 (Aus version of 911) and you can still get the police out. It's just that in most towns, especially small ones, there isn't really any reason to stay open. Rarely anyone needs arresting overnight, the crime level is fairly low, gun violence is practically nil outside cities. If you need the police, either there would be an officer on call or police from another nearby town would come out.

they are like 5 bucks if you have money for a phone you have money for those.

It might be because I live in one of the most dangerous cities in America, but damn I didn't know police stations closed

That's actually illegal. The police can't close! They're emergency responders! Emergency responders can't ever close! That's why they are what they are!

You're an idiot. One, this is in Australia, not the USA. And two, you can still get emergency services, they just aren't at the station. You ring 000, and then they will send someone out, either a local police officer on call, or someone from further away in a larger town where the station isn't shut. But the vast majority of police stations close overnight in Australia, especially everywhere that isn't a major city.

dont they usually have a wall phone right inside the first set of doors? idk, maybe that's just the ones in my area.
