Today, my dad, under threats of disowning me, insisted that I offer my sister a job in my company. I run my own law firm, she is a hairdresser. FML

It's not up to you or your father to supply your sister with a job. Especially if she's under qualified. FYL

So let him disown you. He doesn't sound like much of a dad anyway.

Say okay... As soon as she's finished with law school :)

If she desperately needs a job and isn't a total screw up, why can't she be a receptionist or assistant or something? I understand you likely already have someone in these positions, but it's your sister, help her out! Disclaimer: if she's a total flake and will only cause drama and aggravation, disregard.

@50 It isn't as simple as that. Hiring your family members is a bad idea for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, the subordinate might come to resent the family member who is his or her boss, and secondly, other employees will invariably make allegations of nepotism if the subordinate gets any kind of promotion, raise, perk, or other benefits.

Here are some of the things a legal secretary does. I am pretty sure someone trained to be a hairdresser would be unable to do half these things, unless they got further schooling. I googled "Legal Secretary" and this is what I got. Job Description In a law office the secretary must perform such duties as preparing legal papers that include motions, complaints, summonses, subpoenas, pretrial agreements, various legal forms and client correspondence. In order to accomplish these tasks in an efficient and accurate manor, the Legal Secretary must be familiar with legal terminology and procedures. Technology Skills: Being proficient in-- Word processing Spreadsheet Presentation Document Management Time & Billing Calendar & Docketing Transcription Desktop Publishing Videoconferencing Writing Skills: Legal secretaries are frequently responsible for drafting routine correspondence and file memos as well as proofreading legal documents such as pleadings, briefs, discovery and transactional documents. Transcription Skills: -Fast typing speed (50 to 100 words per minute). -Strong grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and language skills are necessary as well an understanding of legal terminology. Familiarity with Legal Documents and Terminology.

You're old enough to own your own law firm and your dad still feels like he can threaten you? I'd call his bluff.

Didn't you see "Legally Blonde?" You should always have a hairdresser expert witness on staff to help you win murder cases!

Talk her up to your fellow lawyer friends and say "Hey, my sister is a great hairdresser. If you ever need a trim or something, here's her card". If the opportunity ever comes up where someone needs a haircut to look good for court, schmooze for her. Beyond that, what can she do without training? Cleaning service?

receptionist??? I'm sure she knows how to answer some phones and schedule appointments.
