Sometimes, people use the word "allergic" to mean they hate something (eg. I'm allergic to Rebecca Black). Perhaps the OPs father didn't literally mean that he was allergic to peanuts. I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

Most people are allergic to the mold in unprocessed peanuts and not the actual peanut. Peanut butter is made from processed peanuts so the mold isn't in it. A lot of people can eat peanut butter even if they are "allergic to peanuts." FYI. So his argument is valid.
