Today, my driver's-side door was so frozen that the locking mechanism wouldn't move. My passenger-side door's lock worked, but the door itself wouldn't budge. The door handle on the other hand, budged quite well. It budged right off its hinges. FML

I think you are referring to a lighter (U.S. term). When you said torch, an acetylene welding torch popped into my head...

To thaw the locking mechanism you can use a torch to heat up your key and then put that in the lock

Speaking in terms of you're not driving a coupe , did you try the back doors?

Staying home sounds like a good idea. One year I broke my door handle off in a similar situation.

I hope that you learned your lesson. Now stay inside forever like us.

I don't get snow where I live. does insurance cover this kind of thing? you could file a claim for weather damage?

If the person stands by the car and sings, "Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there," someone will materialize from thin air to fix it right away. I saw it on TV and they can't lie on TV.

no, they don't unfortunately... and I have to have the bottom of my door fixed for this same reason :(

Well now you will always assist shotgun...how nice of you!

I read that too fast... Is it really too hard to slide/climb over the console? It's a pain yes but it doesn't take too long...

You need to read it a third time. The drivers side wouldn't even unlock, so OP tried the passenger door and the door itself didn't open, but the handle pulled off. OP would have climbed over the console, if the door had opened.

Ah...well then...backseat climbing it is...

Get some hot water from your faucet (not boiling that may do some damage) and pour it on your door. That should thaw it out.

No no this makes it worse! The water will freeze and then it'll take much longer to get in. Trust me this is only done once, then lesson learned.

time to break out the crowbar, OP

Today, my driver's-side door was so frozen that it started singing "Let it go". FML
