Damn.
Although the father's way of going about this was very much inappropriate, he may not be entirely in the wrong. Perhaps he could not stand their being married and discovered they truly were not meant to be together, so he found it best that OP take her in as he may not be the best choice to raise a young child alone. It's a possibility.
Regardless of whether or not he felt he was the right type of person to raise a child, he never should have mentioned that TO the child, or made her think that he didn't want her at all. So yeah, there might be other reasons behind the divorce, but saying something like that to a little girl is just a huge no-no. That might mess her up later on.
That definitely is a possibility, but you don't use a child to deliver that message! All that child will hear is my Daddy didn't want me. She's not going to hear "my daddy loves me so much that he was willing to give me up to have a better life", even if that's the case. All that is a conversation that needs to be had between the 2 adults....not a 5 yr old.
drifter.. You are a prick and by my guess someone ****** you over so now all women are to blame.

That really sucks, OP, I'm really sorry. You're better off without him, and I hope you and your daughter will have a happy life, despite all the trauma. On a second note, I really don't know how anyone could ever vote 'you totally deserved it' for this FML. :-/
the fact that he knew you'd have to break it to your daughter is ******
FYL for sure!! I think I'd rather be told via text message than like that. Your husband is an ass.
I'm sorry but, I don't care about his reasoning is for wanting the divorce, anybody who would say something like that to or around a five year old is a total bastard. It's just wrong to bring kids into these kinds of things because it's not their fault you married (apparently) wrong or that you assisted in their procreation.
My, my my. I'd think this was made up, but there are so many idiots walking about. OP, get a REAL man in you and your girl's life.
that takes a very low person to say that to a child ....

what a screwed up loser he doesn't deserve you or your little girl
Blurting that out was uncalled for especially in front of his own daughter. OP, best of luck ripping him dry with child support. You & your daughter deserve better. FYL
