Why she would announce that we don't know, but OP didn't say HOW she announced it. Was she all cheery about it? Was she crying? There's three possibilities: 1) it happened BEFORE her and OP got together 2) she cheated, and for the one that hasn't been mentioned at all, that could be a very sad possiblity, 3) she was raped. All OP said was it happened at the dinner table, which wasn't appropriate, and that he didn't know.

I don't think she would just say, "I am no longer a virgin" at the dinner table if she was raped. I was raped before I lost my virginity, but I did not consider the rape as losing my virginity.

Everyone is different. I was molested when I was little, and when I finally had sex with someone I loved I didn't consider that to be losing my virginity. Depending on the personality of OP's girlfriend she could consider getting raped as her losing her virginity. If that was the case or not we don't know.
