Today, my Jewish boyfriend came over for my extended family's Easter party. My grandmother made fun of him for being Jewish so badly, that he left, crying. She doesn't see what she did wrong. FML

I believe in respecting my elders, however is this situation I would have pulled my grandmother aside at the very first comment she made. I would have told her apologize and to change the subject and that if she continued WE would be leaving. Your boyfriend is a guest and should be treated with respect. I know family is important but there are lines you just dont cross. I can't believe you let the insults continue to the point he was crying. It's your family and you needed to have controlled the situation.

Your grandma's a bitch. That's so horrible. Hopefully you'll be able to patch things up with your bf.

What a moron. (I know I should be respectful, but this is simply bad.)

You don't HAVE to be respectful. Respect is earned, not owed. That's an old **** all right.

Given the fact that her grandmother gave her boyfriend no respect what so ever, I'd say you're in the clear on this one.

Her grandmother didn't think she should be respectful, why would you?

The people that mainly believe in the "rule" respect your elders are the elders. It's an old saying they use to try to justify when they're rude and ignorant. Respect is earned not just given. I have certain amount of respect for every person. It's their choice if they want to gain more or lose the amount they have. That's like saying you have to respect someone because of their color, background, etc. It just doesn't work that way.

FML has taught me to appreciate the fact that my grandparents died off when I was a small child..

38, That's sad. Who knows if they were sweet or not? I think it's ****** up to be glad anyone died to be honest, it just shows bitterness & hatred on anyone's part.

That's a mature way to deal with it but not everyone chooses to handle situations like that, they just idly let everything happen & they wonder why things get so bad. OP should have like 7 mentioned, stood up to her family or withdrew right away. But a lot of people don't stand up to any bullying or unfairness on any given situation.

I will always be astounded by the extent family loyalty. Continuing an unhealthy family relationship is just as damaging as any other sour relationship. Stay loyal to those that earn your respect on a consistent basis and distance yourself from those that are damaging. Blood is only so thick, and I'm a metaphorical diabetic.

Awwe. :( go try to comfort and patch things up with him, confront her later.

Grandmothers. Giving us FMLs since the beginning of time.

Maybe she has a problem with juice and she just misheard you.

What a bad example for a Grandma to make, or anyone for that matter. Isn't hospitality important anymore? Making fun of someone because of what they believe is not cool. Sorry for your BF OP.
