Today, my mom came over to me and whispered something in my ear. I didn't hear it and assumed it was a joke, so I started laughing. Turns out my aunt died. FML

That sucks.. But you should have told her you didn't hear what she said, she would have repeated

"Laughter is the language of the soul" - Pablo Neruda Still, no harm in saying "sorry, I didn't catch that". Remember that so you don't make an ass of yourself next time OP.

Next time use your words... The word "what" would have worked nicely in this situation.

"Pardon" would have been a nicer alternative.

This is a lesson for all of us. Listen twice as much. Speak less. You must have been in outer space. Anyone who whisper in my ear who is that close would have been real clear? Make amends to mom and move on.

I'm wondering why your mother had to whisper that instead of just saying it out loud. Even if you were in a public place and she wanted it to be private it makes no sense because no way would you have been able to hear her. But still, didn't you see a look of distress on her face to help clue you in that she wasn't joking? You should have just asked her to repeat herself. YDI

On one hand you should have clarified or not responded at all, but it makes me wonder what kind of situation it was that your mom couldn't tell you any later and had to whisper it to you, maybe you were in a public area and then you reaction would have been bad so it would have been inappropriate to tell you just then... I'm somewhat sympathetic because I suck at catching whispers, but... That's tough

That's when you use the "what?" word... Not that hard

When you assume you make an ass out of you and... no just you!
