My husband and I had that issue with his mother and step-father while we were living in the same state for a short while. We set them straight and shut that shit down. "you are NOT welcome to walk into our home without calling or AT LEAST knocking and being let in." What if we were getting frisky in the living room? Not okay! They were pissed because "we're family and shouldn't have those rules". Yeah... No, not in my house (even IF we are renting from you). I pay for my privacy, respect it or you are not welcome.
