Today, my sister asked me to help her set up for my niece's birthday party. Being the lazy person that I am, I got my niece to blow up the non-helium balloons. Apparently she's allergic to latex and I'll be the one paying for the hospital bill. FML

Today, my sisters and I were throwing my mom a birthday party. Since I'm not good at baking, I ordered her a really nice and expensive cake. As my daughter and I were headed out the door, she told me she had added some sprinkles to make it pretty. It was the silica beads from a package. FML

Today, is my little sister's 16th birthday. I spent my last $20 on a gift for her, cleaned the house for her party, made an ice cream cake, and got her a rose. What did I get? "I hope you kept the receipt for this. Oh, and stay in your room during my party." FML

I voted YDI, but I think I may have been a bit hasty. Who's to say that the allergy was well known? I mean, I know parents today, and if their child is allergic to something, they don't keep it in the house. I think if they knew she was allergic to latex the wouldn't get latex non-helium balloons. If they knew about it and still got them, they should be the ones paying the hospital bill, because it's their own damn fault there were latex balloons in the first place. Chances are they didn't know, and what a way to find you. At least she's okay, right?

FYL Why did she provide latex balloons in the first place? She would have played with them during the party and gotten an allergic reaction anyway.

Some people are just talking out of their asses. If the girl was around in the first place while they were setting up then its not a surprise party. Why not keep her busy and have her blow up some balloons. Its not like the OP told her to do it and then sat there and watched her do it and didnt help in any other way in setting up the party. Theres nothing wrong with that. The girl is probably young and no one in the family knew about the allergy yet. Hence its not the OPs fault that she had the allergic reaction. She would have found out about it sooner or later you cant go around suing people or making them pay for medical bills for something you didnt know yourself. Even if the parents did know about it and were expecting the OP to blow them up, its their fault there was latex around in the first place. What parent would have it around and even risk their child having an allergic reaction. The parents are just cheap and think they can guilt the OP out of the money for the bills cuz its his/her niece. So really, FTL because theyre just assholes.

Sorry, that does suck that you have to pay for the bill, but YDI for having her blow up balloons for her own birthday. Also, having children inflate balloons is kind of dangerous anyway, regardless of a latex allergy. =/
