Today, my telephone line was hit by lightning. I discovered that not only will lightning fry a router, it will also destroy any PCs connected to that router via network cables. I also discovered that a $10 phone line surge protector would have saved nearly $3,000 worth of PC equipment. FML

You lucky you. Surge protector worth 10 bucks would probably set your house on fire.

HAH. YDI for not getting one though. This one was actually good. Also, I like the OPs name.

3k for a computer!? What the hell kind of computer are you using? I can build a top of the line gaming system for under 2k.

Don't you know about Alienware? Those things run around 4k and up. There is no top of the line gaming system for 2k, unless you're using generic product.

True top of the line gaming computers are about 10k... any computer you build for 2k would be blown outa the water by a real gaming computer.

I live in CPT as well... that was one hell of a lightning storm. I think in my 27 years i've probably seen 3 like them. Luckily nothing of mine got fried, but our streets power did trip. And yes, DSL is the best option you have here.

Yep. And some of the 40 dollar surge protectors will even replace any equipment plugged into them up to a certain amount (mine is $100,000).

I see you're in South Africa? I guess the houses there are not equipped with phone line surge protectors standard? Interesting. But yes, sadly it was probably not only the phone line that was hit, as it's unlikely the charge would travel through your phone line, the modem, the router, and into your computer... but I suppose it's possible. Either way, yes, surge protectors are good things. All my expensive stuff is wireless, so my router could fry if my protection fails, but not my computers. My stuff is also EMP hardened.

Ah, something has been learned from a story posted on fml. I never thought I would see the day...
