Today, there was a power outage at my apartment. I ended up deciding that the power wasn't going to come on any time soon, and that I should go to a hotel for the night. Just after I unpacked at the hotel, my neighbor called to say the power had come back. FML

Um...six years ago, we had a horrible ice storm right before Christmas and were without power for literally a week. No one in town went to a hotel; they all dealt with it, be it with generators or even shacking up with family/friends who had generators/fireplaces and the like. You lose power for not even 24 hours and go to a hotel? YDI. You can't live without power/technology that long? My life is on the computer and I dealt with it...not to mention it ruined everyone's Christmas spirit.

Who goes to a hotel because the power is out?

in an apartment you aren't going to lose enough heat overnight for it to be a big deal if the power didn't come on. Even where I am in northern Canada you would be OK until the power in your neighbourhood came back on.

I'm just wondering. Why would you go to a hotel if power is out? I can't really comprehend that. I mean - where's the connection?

Well, I did once, but it was the middle of winter in New England, the power was out for over a week, and there was no heat or hot water. But I agree that the OP was just being a big wimp in this case.

I've never gone to a hotel, but I have left the area before. We had a freak blizzard in October, and were informed that our power would be out for about a week. Once the driving ban was lifted, my boyfriend and I grabbed some clothes and the cats and went to see his parents in Tennessee. We could have survived, but we didn't feel like it. But one night?

dude never waste money on a hotel. get to the dollar store and buy some candles.

why go to a hotel. don't understand your incapacity. so confused.

OP probably needed more than light. They need power to dry and style hair if the power wasn't on by morning, a way to cook food, heat if it's a particularly cold night, they may need Internet for something, a way to charge their phone or power an alarm clock.
