OP here :) Some of you have taken this the wrong way so let me clarify - I was in NO way trying to garner 'likes' for donating to the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital. I never even mentioned that I donated, I just posted the link and a little comment saying Please donate in honour of his memory. I assume no one donated because they didn't say anything and I just think it's a bit sad because even a couple of dollars goes a long way. Not many of my friends would have heard of the hospital either so I thought if I brought it to their attention they could donate and help the children in South Africa receive the care and treatment they desperately need. I believe it's a great way to honour Nelson Mandela's memory.

Apparently raising awareness of a good cause to donate to, and being annoyed when people completely overlook it is attention seeking now. You guys need to stop jumping to the worst conclusions so quickly, and learn to give people the benefit of the doubt. Props to OP for donating.
Maybe donate to someone who wasn't a terrorist next time.
I've seen exactly two posts from my friends about Nelson Mandela today. One was just a shared photo, the other was a status on which two grown people didn't know who he was; "I slept through history (class) lol". But when Brian Griffin died, it blew up my news feed all week. Paul Walker stuff just finished being all over my feed. People these days disgust me.
AWW lovely gesture though!
I'm in Aust, and my feed shows more Mandella than Walker, although the occasional Walker thing still shows up. I feel for you, having to deal with idiots like that. Also, people may be confused as I think Mandella was played by Freeman in a film about his life… but I may be mistaken (don't shoot me if I am)
Wow, my newsfeed is jam packed with statuses about it- I can't believe there are people who don't know who he is. They should be ashamed of themselves; Mandiba is a hero, and the world should be mourning the loss of a treasure.
Yeah right, he was a communist who's associates are known terrorists. Quit fooling yourself and do legitimate research as to his true impact on South Africa.
Am I the only one here who's never heard of Nelson Mandela before?
Yes. With the utmost sensitivity and personal respect for you, go pick up a book. He is worthy of the time it would take you to learn about him and his sacrifices.
It's okay; I didn't recognize his name until someone elaborated about him on the radio. Then again, I don't watch TV. With that being said, I don't know who Paul Walker is, either; I don't delve much into pop culture. I was, however, shocked and heartbroken when I found out about Tom Clancy's death. Before everyone goes pummeling the thumbs-down icon, it's more of a lack in exposure to social media and news feeds than ignorance. As #66 said, chastising someone for not knowing about another person's death is a bit presumptuous.
@93 You don't need social media to know about Mandela. His triumphs were long before social media was invented. There are many other avenues to receive information. I get not wanting to get lost in pop culture, but world news isn't necessarily pop culture. And I'm sorry but I don't understand not wanting to know about the world beyond your front door.
wouldn't fml comments qualify as social.media?

People in my class today were talking about how Morgan Freeman was better than Mandela anyways because his voice was cooler. People these days can be awful.
Look on the bright side OP, half of those friends (the Morgan Freeman pics) will probably serve you sandwiches at Subway 20 years from now... I actually had a friend who posted "RIP MORGAN FREEMAN" on his Facebook. I called him out on that and the next thing I know most of his friends and family are deriding him for being an insensitive idiot. There is hope.
