Honestly, I hope you helped him well and were really nice with her. I am sure there are many other places where he could buy that ring, but at least one of them wanted you to know. Men do not get hints, but they are not complete idiots. Maybe not now but later, he will be aware of your good manners and maturity. And for now, it will hurt his male ego when he sees you don't care and she will not feel as she "won".
