Today, while blissfully unaware that it was the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, I was making paper airplanes during my free period in school. Next thing I know, I was reported for, "making jokes about the 9/11 attacks." FML

It's only making fun of 9/11 if OP purposefully crashed the paper planes. If they got upset just for him flying them, I'd say they're being a bit over sensitive. 9/11 was a tragedy, but it doesn't make such simple activities suddenly taboo.

My gosh everybody on top is getting down voted. Regardless of what they say OP, that is an exceedingly stupid thing to get in trouble for. It is a paper airplane. People are getting way to sensitive. I understand that 9/11 affected thousands and thousands of people, but it is a freaking paper airplane.

You do all realize that 9/11 happen back in 2001, right? 14 years ago. There are a lot of people today that are too young to actually remember the event, and even if they know about it, it will never have the same impact on people. I'm not saying people need to get over it, but at some point, you just have to accept that the world will change and move on.

To be fair, how many people do you think can name offhand the exact dates the holocaust spanned over? And I'm not talking about the years, but the precise dates. Also, the holocaust resulted in millions of deaths (much more than 9/11) AND it happened in more than one country, instead of one in particular. Not to mention, the holocaust included things like human experimentation, concentration camps, gas chambers, deliberate killing of children, etc... So it makes sense that the holocaust would be remembered 70 years later. Plus, people DO make holocaust jokes all the time (either really nasty ones, or for silly notions like "feminazi/grammar nazis") so I guess you can say that some people have indeed "gotten over it." Not saying people should forget 9/11 or anything like that, I'm just saying your comparison isn't really accurate.

Really, you're going to compare 9/11 to the persecution and genocide of a people, what the ****

Yofigful - Which part of "I am NOT saying you need to get over it" was so hard to grasp? Also, I agree with the other comments that comparing 9/11 to the Holocaust is insulting. A terror attack is awful, but it is in no way the same as a war that massacred millions and ravaged several countries for years.

It's one thing to not realize what date it is. That happens, but the fact that you're from New York I don't understand how you could have possibly forgotten.

For all we know, OP could have been born a few years after 9/11 and had more important things to worry about.

If OP is making paper airplanes in school, it's possible he wasn't even alive when it happened (or at least was really young when it happened). I teach high school and I can tell you the 9/11 attacks were not the first thing on my students' minds this morning. For a lot of them, it's history. They didn't watch it on tv, they haven't watched the changing political climate, they don't understand the global implications. It's not a part of their memory (like it is for me). It's like the Challenger explosion or JFK's assassination-- learning about it in school isn't really the same thing as living it. And OP may not even live in New York City. There are other places in New York.

I just feel like New York as a whole would make a bigger deal out of this than any other state.

#162, NY is not just NYC. My 10 year old niece and I live 4 hours north of NYC and her school didn't do anything. It was a regular school day.

I'm pretty sure every single one of you who says he deserves it has forgotten what day it was some point in your life.. It's not like he intentionally did it. calm down

you didn't know that 9/11 was the anniversary of 9/11?

To those people commenting about how the OP is from New York as if that means something here, you do realize that New York is a state that includes portions other than New York City right?

Thank you. I live 4 hours from the city. Everyone automatically assumes anyone from NY lives in NYC or has been there.

I forgot also, no big deal. It's my best friends birthday so were going to celebrate :)

It's also my oldest sister's birthday and my first child (baby girl) was born one week ago, so I'm right there with you.

I get the best reaction my son's birthday my wedding anniversary are on 9/11 being in the uk that's 9th of November. try saying I can't wait for 9/11 or woohooo 9/11 with out people giving you shit.

Well to be fair saying "I can't wait for 9/11" is an unnatural way of phrasing that sentence. It would be much more natural to say "I can't wait for my sons birthday" or "I can't wait for Friday". If someone said "I can't wait for 9/11" In reference to their sons birthday I would assume that they were deliberately phrasing it that way to get a reaction from people and then I would think they were rather sad.

Kinda like the play ground bully finally had his ass kicked by the kid he's picked on all year then goes home crying and the little kid get hell over it

Why does he deserve it? Do you know what 12-7 was? Or the date of all the other major tragic events throughout history? No? Then stfu

Honestly, your point about December 7th, 1941 is valid. As for all the other tragic dates, that's pretty irrelevant. We're talking about foreign attacks on the US. You could probably throw in a few from the Revolutionary War or the war with Mexico.
