Today, while on my run, I was attacked by my neighbor's new dog. It apparently didn't like me running past their house and broke free from its chain. I now have stitches and was just told that I'm probably being taken to court for the emotional distress I caused her and the dog. FML

Take pictures of your injury now, in case this goes to court after you've healed. As long as you have a good lawyer, you shouldn't lose. Still, FYL for the hassle and lawyer fees :

you will win the case. she obviously didn't have the dog properly secured

Go to the police - she will be charged and the dog put to sleep as it should be. And sue her for the medical bills.

WTF is wrong with your neighbor? damn. go get yourself a pit bull or something and let it loose on HER and see how she likes that.

Please don't stereotype dogs. Pit Bulls are no more violent by nature than other breed, ignorant people abuse and train them to be violent. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners.

If you have Homeowners or Renters insurance, call your insurer immediately. A large part of your policy involves handling and defending suits like this. The only catch is that your particular problem may or may not trigger coverage this time around (generally it's for if you hurt some else or break their stuff). It just depends on what you have in your particular policy. But call them ASAP, since part of having coverage is that you're obligated to let your insurer know immediately if you're sued so they can be involved from the start.

I'm a huge dog lover, but here in Australia that dog would be destroyed, it's the owners that would be sued, laws might be different here but we don't have to pay people if we get bitten by their dogs

tell her if she sues, you'll have the bitch put down ... and maybe the dog too

**** their "emotional trauma" claim. The dog attacked you; where I come from, that means it gets put down, and they have to pay your medical bills to boot. I'm pretty sure that applies to Missouri, too.

That's bull. You could have the dog put down for attacking you if you wanted. There's no way she'll successfully sue you.

I think they are just trying to scare you out of suing them, which you should do for medical bills
