People, there's nothing wrong with calling the pound key a hashtag. British people have been calling it a hashtag for ages. I don't see a problem to be honest.
No, it was the hash "key", it didn't become the "tag" until all that twitter pish. As a Scot, the original post did confuse me - I'd never heard of the "pound key"!
I stand corrected.
Same here. I was wondering what the hell the pound key was. It's referred to as the hash key where I am.
And for what it's worth, I don't consider # on its own to be a hashtag. A # with a word of phrase after it such as #failpoundkey is what I'd think of as a hashtag, but each their own.
#customersaremorons
I've always called it the number sign, but according to Wikipedia they only do that in Canada.
Me too. I always have to think on what a pound key is, since a) I barely every use it and b) it's a number sign. I'd probably recognize hashkey more then pound, since it reminds me of waffle fries. And well the recent association of the symbol to hashtag.
#37 Nope. Australia, too. We also say hash. I've only ever heard it called a pound key, however, by Americans.
I'd be OK if I've never heard: -TV shows (or anyone, really) begging you to follow them. -hashtag -viral -going green -selfie -foodie -that escalated quickly -a whole nother -acrossed
- ecsetera - I seen - sorrynotsorry - longhairdontcare - throwback Thursday - any pictures taken at the gym in full make up and hair done + matching lulu lemon gym wear for $200+
I had to "Google" what the hell "hashtag" meant while watching a car commercial one day. It still makes no sense to me. We need to stop renaming things just to please younger generations.
It's not re-naming anything. It's the "hash" sign that's used to "tag" posts on Twitter. That's perfectly logical, yeah? The FML is about using a Twitter thing in real life, not about the word existing.
I'm Australian and I have no idea what the 'pound' key is. I assumed it would be £ .....
Erin37 - me too! I saw it and had to look at the FML a few times to get what was wrong. Woops.
#51 It's not pound as in currency. It's pound as in the measure of weight. They're still using the imperial system.
