I love 80s and 90s action movies that require some single dorky savant esque character to break into government documents at some time. *fervent typing* Protagonist's love interest: What's going on!? Dorky "hacker": I'm hacking into the mainframe. I've got 20 seconds to get the password before it shuts down on me. Protagonist: WE HAVEN'T GOT MUCH TIME! and so forth. Point being, I'm with the people on the misuse of "mainframe." Not so much because I want to be technologically accurate, but because it sounds hella lame. Either way...sucks that no one knew how to plug anything in for almost 2 hours.
I've done things like that too, except the it was a little more high-profile then the credit machines in a store... I ended up taking down a chunk of our network infrastructure, and since I was the IT guy I had to fix it. Take that, me!
Shit dude, I did something very similar at work the other week. I threw a pile of rubbish into our binstore, which is right underneath our projector (I work in a sports bar). the rubbish landed on a wire and killed the picture, right at the most intense part of the Scotland v Ireland Six Nations match. FML, I guess :P
At least you've never burned a hole in your finger with degreaser and been forced to file a safety hazard report with OSHA because of it -_-
A wire that important shouldn't be accessible for you to trip over ! Your boss is retarded, should've checked!
I'm not sure, but chances are that that exposed wire violates some kind of legal code.
Oh for God's sake! Who cares what the OP called the computer system. #45, sorry you wasted your time. At any rate, sorry about the system going down, I'm not a fan of the "Sue-Happy" attitude, but that sort of thing could constitute a work hazard, so don't feel too down on yourself.
That's messed up. The company shouldn't have had the wires laying around. No matter what the company should be able to put the wires in a better area.

Clearly the wire posed a safety hazard. You should sue your boss.
Why is it out in the open where people can trip on it? Especially at a restaurant, because there is so much traffic! That is not your fault at all!
