I'm sorry this happened to you, but if your name was on the lease, you should have been making the payments directly to the landlord yourself. Don't trust other people with your rent money, regardless if they're good friends or just roommates. I hope it all works out well for you.

if you're the one paying, why did your roommate have access to the rent money? If your name is on the lease, don't you think you should have been a little more careful about making sure to get it done right? And 6 months of back rent and your landlord didn't come after you? You never asked for a receipt ever after paying? Sorry, next time you'll be a little more careful with your rent money.

I hate to say it, but you got screwed, royally. And it's partially your fault; you clearly trust too much. On the other hand, your so-called friend is a lying, two-faced, individual who owes you some coin. How are you ever going to get that back? as a land lord this is 100% your fault. it's a violation of your lease to have an unauthorized occupant. next time dont break the rules.
