Bad hair day

By Tony - This FML is from back in 2010 but it's good stuff

Today, I was fired for having a haircut that was 'inappropriate for the workplace'. I have alopecia. My boss told me to stop making up excuses. FML

you need to get some free legal advice, just call any lawyer in the phonebook and ask for a consultation. you are a new client, so the first 30 min is free.

Alopecia is the universe's way of telling you that you should be bald. Shave your head and hope that you don't have a raisin scalp.

Alopecia is not a disease that develops overnight. If you chose not to make the best of a bad situation and get an appropriate cut (or shave), you can't blame the disorder. It's completely appropriate for men to shave their heads.

I can't see if OP is male or female, but either way, someone having a "bad haircut" or a medical disorder should not be grounds for termination. The thickness or thinness of one's hair typically doesn't effect their work performance or personality. At least, not that I've ever seen.

Britney - It doesn't state a gender, though their nickname is "Tony", leading me to believe they're male. sallen - Understandably it's appropriate for men to shave their heads, though not every man looks good shaven. Also, it doesn't say anywhere how much hair was lost. There are varying degrees of alopecia. If OP had been female, it would have still been appropriate for them to shave their head and choose not to wear a wig.

I just don't think that a girl (or even a guy) should ever have to make the decision to do that if they don't want to. Don't get me wrong, I do think a professional appearance is important for most jobs, but when it comes to a medical condition that doesn't really effect anyone but that person who has it, employers should be more accepting of it.

Totally agree. I didn't mean for my comment to sound like I was telling OP to shave his(?) head. I was just trying to say there's nothing wrong with it if he (or a female, even) chose to do so.

Gotcha. I've dealt with my own fair share of hair troubles in my lifetime, not alopecia but something just as bad, and if I were to lose my job over it I would be so upset. I mean, I'm just like any other girl, and my hair is really important to me in how it looks, and I could never shave it off. I'm not usually the type to just throw the S word ("sue") out there, but I do think she should consider it. This almost seems like discrimination, and maybe I'm taking it too far (not that I care), but she needs to do something about it.

hey man, I'm 14 I've had the shit since I was 6. as u know it's not an easy thing to deal with and I got it pretty bad too. if u ever need help there's NAAF it the national alopecia areota foundation. there's a conference with plenty of support from every one. now about this boss. I would sue him and own his business. thats harassment on a huge level. alopecia isn't the funnest thing in the world, but skin heads have to stick together. check out the web sight and try to get involved in this. it really helps!

That's the single most useful piece of advice I've seen on this site in a long time.

What are you talking about? I'm always helpful to the OP; I let them know just why they deserve what happened so they can learn from it.

Sue that asshole to hell under the americans with disabilities act he cant fire you for that reason. SUE HIM!!!!

It's simple, you sue him. As alopecia is a hereditary disability, you have grounds to sue him for discrimination.

I think it's time for a "Mr. Krabs" situation and get that "Money, Money, Money!" lol...
