only a ******* moron would pet a strange animal...
You should always ask for permission before petting someone's pet. As a pet owner nothing Irks me more.
And that's why I never pet strangers' pets.
Well not never. I always ask because my 2 year old loves animals.
If you didn't ask, YDI so much. Never had a dog myself, but I have taken care of several dogs when their owners were on holiday. Absolutely hated it when people just approached to pet them. Most of the dogs I babysat were fine with that, but one wasn't. She Had a shitty upbringing with her first owners and was dominant and unpredictable. I did have her fully under control, always had her on a leash and most of the time she was friendly to other people. But at few times she tried to bite when people got to close to her. Once a child tried to approach her. Told the kid to not pet the dog. Kid wouldn't listen and still tried to come closer. Warned him again. Kid started whining to his mom. And the mother actually got mad at me for not letting her little shit pet the dog. Anyway, even if I was just raising a puppy, I wouldn't want everyone to pet it. I wouldn't want to have a dog that's always friendly to everyone. Sorry for the (longer than I expected it) rant, it just annoys me to hell.
Never pet a dog without permission from their owners. Even the nicest dog could attack unprovoked. As someone who works with dogs daily this is my biggest pet peeve. You don't know how the dog was raised, or its temperament. It could be fantastic with people or not. It all depends on its personality. It's also possible the dog felt threatened; every dog has a personality, likes and dislikes just like people. I understand how I can come off a little mean and I really don't mean to be but you always have to approach an animal with caution. I'm going to call this both FYL and YDI because you didn't know it would happen, but you also pet reached down and may have scared him. For future reference ignore the dog until it's calm. I hope your injuries aren't too bad OP good luck

You never pet someone's dog without their permission. They could be a rescue dog who doesn't like strangers, easily excitable, or they could be a dog for disabilities. I'm sorry you got attacked and the guy seemed uncaring but dude ydi
